Propeller Shaft Alignment

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Haul the boat or work with boat in the water (in-water alignment is more accurate).

  2. 2

Remove the propeller and inspect the shaft for straightness using a dial indicator.

  3. 3

Check cutless bearing for wear by moving shaft up and down; more than 1/16" movement requires replacement.

  4. 4

Open the access panel to the shaft coupling and engine mounts.

  5. 5

Measure the gap between the shaft coupling halves using feeler gauges at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o clock positions.

  6. 6

All measurements should be within 0.003 inches (0.08mm) of each other.

  7. 7

Adjust engine mount height using the adjustment nuts to achieve parallel alignment.

  8. 8

Also check for angular alignment by comparing gap measurements.

  9. 9

Recheck alignment after any engine mount adjustments; repeat until within spec.

  10. 10

Torque all coupling bolts to manufacturer specification and recheck after first sea trial.
